Set the right goal: under two minutes, not under three seconds
First, some perspective. The official world record for a single solve of a standard 3×3×3 cube is 2.76 seconds, set by Teodor Zajder of Poland at a competition in Gdańsk in February 2026 — the first official solve under three seconds. The record for an average of five solves is 3.51 seconds, set by Yiheng Wang of China in Hefei in June 2026.
Those numbers are real, and they have nothing to do with you. Getting under two minutes is a different game altogether. It doesn’t take years of finger training. It takes one reliable method, learned properly, and some steady practice.
That method is called layer by layer. It has been taught to beginners for decades, because it works.
Step 0: get a cube that doesn’t fight you
You can learn on any cube, but a stiff one will slow you down and wear down your patience. Two things matter for a first cube:
- Get a magnetic one. Small magnets inside snap each layer into line, even when your turns are sloppy — and they will be, at first. Non-magnetic cubes let layers drift out of line and catch.
- Don’t buy a flagship. Entry-level magnetic cubes from speedcubing brands such as MoYu and GAN are widely available and inexpensive. You won’t know what turning feel you prefer until you’ve solved a few hundred times, so there’s no point paying for features you can’t yet feel.
Step 1: learn the layer-by-layer method
Instead of trying to fix all 54 stickers at once, you build the cube up in three layers, starting from one face.
The first layer: a cross, then the corners
Pick a colour to start with — most tutorials use white. Make a plus sign of white edges on that face, making sure each edge also matches the centre colour on its side. Then place the four white corners. Most people can do this layer by feel, without memorising anything, once they’ve watched how the pieces move.
The second layer: the middle edges
Turn the cube over so the finished layer is on the bottom. Now you slot the four middle-layer edges into place. This is the first time you’ll memorise a fixed sequence of moves — an algorithm — and there are just two, mirror images of each other: one for edges that need to go left, one for edges that need to go right.
The last layer: orient, then position
This is where most beginners get stuck, so give it time. It comes in two stages:
- Orient the top layer so its whole face shows one colour. Usually you make a cross on top first, then turn the corners until their top colour faces up.
- Position the top pieces — swap corners and edges around until each one sits in its correct place.
Across the whole method you’ll need somewhere around six to eight algorithms. That’s all. The methods the fastest solvers use rely on well over a hundred, and you don’t need any of them to get under two minutes.
Step 2: practise in a way that builds speed
Learning the moves gets you a solve. Repetition gets you under two minutes. A few habits make the biggest difference:
- Be accurate before you’re fast. A mistake in the last layer usually means starting that layer again, which costs far more time than turning slowly.
- Look ahead. While your hands finish one algorithm, let your eyes find the next piece you need. Pausing to search between steps is where most beginner time goes.
- Drill the last layer on its own. Scramble only the top layer and solve it, again and again, until your hands run each algorithm without you narrating it in your head.
- Time yourself every day. A phone stopwatch is fine. Watching the number fall is the best motivation there is.
How long it takes to get under two minutes varies a lot from person to person, so we won’t promise you a number. Short daily sessions work better than one long weekend binge.
Why a method beats trying to be clever
A standard cube can be scrambled into about 43 quintillion different positions — 43,252,003,274,489,856,000, to be exact. That sounds hopeless. But in 2010 a team of researchers used an enormous amount of computer time to prove that every one of those positions can be solved in 20 moves or fewer. Cubers call that number “God’s Number”.
You won’t solve in 20 moves — the layer-by-layer method takes far more. But you don’t need to. The method turns an impossible-looking puzzle into a short, repeatable list of decisions. That’s why memorising a handful of algorithms works so much better than trying to reason your way through every scramble.
What we’d skip
- Don’t start with CFOP. It’s the method most top speedcubers use, but it asks you to learn dozens of algorithms. Starting there before layer by layer feels natural is how a lot of people give up.
- Don’t buy a non-magnetic cube to save a little money. The frustration costs more than the difference in price.
- Don’t measure yourself against the records. Comparing a 90-second solve with a 2.76-second one is like comparing your morning jog with an Olympic final. Measure yourself against your own time from last week.
Quick answers
Do I need a speedcube to get under two minutes?
No. A basic magnetic cube is plenty. Adjustable tension and special lubricants start to matter when you’re shaving seconds off a 30-second solve, not while you’re learning.
How many algorithms do I need?
For the beginner method, around six to eight: two for the middle layer and a handful for the last layer.
Is the beginner method “cheating”?
Not at all. It’s the usual starting point for people who go on to speedcube. Faster methods simply replace some of its steps with bigger sets of algorithms.
What’s the next goal after two minutes?
Under one minute is a common next milestone with the same method — just smoother recognition and fewer pauses. After that, many people start learning the first-two-layers technique from CFOP, known as F2L.
