Found this cryptic clue within the #1 Times fast cryptic e book. I received it for Xmas so I might graduate to some extra difficult cryptic puzzles than the garbage you see within the mass market ones although, if that is the fast Times one, I’m dreading the traditional one I additionally received :-).

I’ve the reply however I do not perceive the complete course of. The clue is:

Herb geese hugging ungrateful daughter (7).

My (incomplete) course of is hidden under in case you wish to method it “clear”.

The “geese hugging” bit …

… is clearly “begins and finish with O“.

That leads me to the answer …

… “OREGANO”, the herb.

But I’m undecided of the second path to the reply …

… how the rest of the clue, “ungrateful daughter” offers the interior letters “REGAN”. Those letters are in “ungrateful” however that would depart “UTFUL” and I’m undecided find out how to do away with these with “daughter”.

Any help appreciated (and hoping this query is appropriate for the location).
