Sara Nies’s Inkubator crossword, “It’s All in the Delivery”—Amy’s write-up
It’s Amy, filling in for Jenni. Puns on the surnames of 4 humorous ladies are the theme this week:
- 17a. [*Issa’s illuminating jokes got the comedy going with a …], RAE OF LIGHT. That’s Issa Rae, ray of sunshine. This doesn’t work nice on the grammatical entrance.
- 26a. [*Margaret kept the fun going with her …], DOG AND PONY CHO. I don’t imagine she’s executed an animal act!
- 47a. [*Amy’s comic timing drew us all in with her …], POEHLER VORTEX. I used to be making an attempt to determine what SCHUMER could be a pun on.
- 62a. [*And Jane ended the evening with a hilarious …], CURTIN CALL.
I just like the span of comedians of their 30s, 50s, and 70s. Can you imagine that the SNL “Weekend Update” catchphrase when Curtin coanchored with Dan Aykroyd within the Seventies was him saying “Jane, you ignorant slut”? (Her rejoinder of “Dan, you pompous ass” is neither crudely gendered nor so properly remembered.)
Fave fill: “PUSH IT,” SMOLDERS, SHTICKS, COLD SHOWER.
Three extra issues:
- 23a. [Word never following a man’s name in wedding announcements], NEE. If he modified his identify upon marriage, you may see the masculine né.
- 38a. [AFAB and still identifying as female], CIS. AFAB = assigned feminine at start.
- 69a. [Michelle, author of “Sharp: The Women Who Made an Art of Having an Opinion” (2018)], DEAN. Don’t know her or the e-book. Here’s a Roxane Gay interview with Dean. (Also, any person inform Dean she has a typo in her e-book title in her Instagram profile.)
3.9 stars from me.
Brandon Koppy’s New York Times crossword—Amy’s write-up
I figured the theme needed to be Tetris by trying on the grid, and certainly, there’s 59d. [Best-selling video game celebrated in this grid], TETRIS extending into the black blocks on the backside. With these 4 unchecked squares, woe to any solver who by no means heard of Tetris, as a result of I don’t know that there’s any approach to know what goes in these squares if that’s a niche in your data. (The black squares are the varied tetrominoes—four-square blocks in assorted shapes—which can be Tetris sport items. The black on the backside could be area stuffed in efficiently by dropping earlier blocks there.)
The theme contains BLOCKBUSTER, DISAPPEARING ACT, and perhaps DROP ME A LINE, for the reason that BLOCKs are DROPped earlier than they DISAPPEAR.
And yeah, a number of individuals aren’t eager on themes invading their Friday puzzle—it PERTURBS them.
New to me: 31a. [N.F.L. QB Tagovailoa], TUA.
A number of clunkers within the fill (like ALPE and OMS) however principally stable.
3.5 stars from me. Bring again my themelesses!
