David Distenfeld’s New York Times crossword—Erin’s write-up

Hi, everybody! It’s Erin, throwing up a grid for Amy, who’s coping with Internet Issues. This is David Distenfeld’s fourth NYT Friday/Saturday puzzle, all up to now 9 months. What jumps out at me is a pleasant cross of triple stacks within the middle, with DIRTY MINDED, STEAMED OPEN, and ARMED FORCES crossing ZOOM MEETING, MARRIED LIFE, and RANK AND FILE. We’ve obtained some older stuff like SUZANNE Somers and OPIE from The Andy Griffith Show. We’ve obtained some actually previous stuff like ELI Whitney and his cotton gin, which led to an explosion within the cotton trade in addition to in slavery throughout the 1800s. And we’ve obtained some spicier fill like SEXILED and drag queen TRIXIE Mattel.
