Your least favourite little bit of OSR or D&D guidelines.

I can see that I’m going to be the odd one out once more.  :P

– I like the principle concept of Vancian magic however not its precise execution in B/X or AD&D 1E, and what I dislike about it typically will get worse with later editions–4E excluded for apparent causes.

– I do not thoughts race as class terribly at first, however I do not assume it interprets effectively into the mid ranges, until you do what ACKS does with a number of racial courses, and that is not my favourite both.

– I’d somewhat have ascending AC, but it surely’s not that massive a deal to me both method.  I’ll play no matter is within the guidelines I’m utilizing and never hassle to vary it.

– My personal D&D-like system has a unified XP monitor, however that was extra for different causes, listed beneath.

– I like saving throws in D&D, even when each implementation of it, in nearly each variations, appears a bit off to me.  B/X saves are the closest to what I like if you concentrate on the 5 classes as one thing else.

– I like escalating hit factors, zero to hero, and on and on, although possibly not the precise method they’re accomplished.

All that to say, what I dislike essentially the most are the place the fault strains are.  It’s a whole lot of little issues that have been in all probability accomplished for good causes on the time, however the reasoning is not all the time clear, and it does not translate effectively whenever you attempt to change it.  Early D&D is directly the best factor to switch ever–new courses, new spells, new gear, and so forth, and likewise the toughest factor to switch ever, as a result of issues that appear arbitrary aren’t, and vice versa.  Examples:

– Paladin too shut in idea to the Cleric for my style.
– Rangers with spells to allow them to heal in order that they are often Aragon.
– The six potential scores look like a bizarre combine to me, and I’m all the time working round it. Most of the issues with expertise stem from the power rating decisions.
– That weapon restrictions appear extra arbitrary the extra you add on.  (They sort of make sense in B/X.)
– Racial stage limits that do not change when the sport expands.
– Hit factors scaling like loopy early then virtually stopping.
– Many spells are off by a stage.
– The stage development typically is whacked, and the variable XP charts are a mirrored image of that, not the trigger.

No one piece of that’s all that massive a deal.  If you preferred all the pieces however one or two of these, you’d home rule it and transfer on.  Which is what I roughly did for a very long time, once I bothered.  When I run it, I can simply play it as is, no home guidelines, and that is higher than altering it, after which when the little issues begin to annoy an excessive amount of, play one thing else.

In my very own system, I’ve touched virtually all the pieces, however the roots are recognizable normally. I’ve received a streamlined XP chart as a result of I’ve utterly tweaked the extent development and altered what “class” means in my model.  I’ve left the choice for variable XP charts within the design, simply have not wanted them but.
