Papa, Vader, Baba, Apa, Dad, Daddy…  There are some ways to say ‘father’, and many alternative definitions of the English phrase ‘father’ within the dictionary. Your father is your male mum or dad, or a person who has raised you, a person can father a toddler, and a person who invented or began one thing could be known as the father of that factor, corresponding to Freud, often called the daddy of psychoanalysis. The leaders of the American revolution are actually often called the Founding Fathers. And that’s not even mentioning all of the meanings of ‘Dad’!

A day to honour fatherhood and paternal bonds, Father’s Day has been celebrated all around the world, albeit on completely different dates, since as early because the Middle Ages. The traditions surrounding Father’s Day fluctuate from area to area, and in some international locations, it’s even a nationwide vacation, corresponding to Estonia, Samoa, and South Korea, the place it’s noticed as Parent’s Day. In the Roman Catholic custom, fathers are celebrated on Saint Joseph’s Day, in March, and within the United Kingdom and the United States the day is held on the third Sunday in June.

In Australia, Father’s Day was initially commemorated in June to match the UK and US and was marked with church companies and the carrying of a crimson flower. It wasn’t till the Thirties that Australians started celebrating Father’s Day on the primary Sunday of September, the primary Sunday of spring, and in 1957 the Father’s Day Council of Australia was established. There is even a nationwide Father of the Year award offered on Father’s Day, which recognises the big influence that fathers have on the group.
