Martin Ashwood-Smith’s New York Times crossword—Amy’s recap
Nice to see Martin’s byline once more! I’m 100% okay with this grid not having stacks of 15s. This 66-worder has a superb mixture of fill lengths.
Fave fill: THREEPEAT, CAT’S CRADLE, SEROTONIN, COUNT BASIE (he’s supervocalic–every vowel used precisely as soon as), SPELUNKS, SCOREBOARDS.
Four clues of word:
- 41a. [It once earned the nickname “poudre de succession” (“inheritance powder”)], ARSENIC. An fully new truth for me, and attention-grabbing.
- 33a. [There is one each in French, Spanish, Italian, Greek, Hawaiian, and Chinook], STATE MOTTO. I completely thought the reply could be some alphabetical or grammatical time period, however nope.
- 54a. [Thy’re sen n ths cle], DELETIONS. Well, that’s a recent kind of clue.
- 22d. [Big fixtures at parks], SCOREBOARDS. Ballparks, not playgrounds or theme parks.
Could do with out an entry like TESTEE, although.
Four stars from me.
